Washington County and its culture encourage innovative agribusiness. The opportunities for growing new crops to produce clean fuels, apparel, furniture, flooring, toys, and a variety of consumer and business goods are unlimited. Rice, soybeans, corn, and cotton are the traditional bumper crops grown in Washington County; however, the new frontier with federal incentives includes products such as bamboo, switchgrass, wheat and milo.
Renowned facilities such as the Stoneville Scientific Research and USDA Research and Incubator facilities provide unique business opportunities for today’s innovative companies. The Delta Research and Extension Center, or DREC, focuses its research and extension activities on cotton, rice, soybean, corn and catfish production.
Scientists and Extension specialists work cooperatively to solve crop and aquaculture production problems and transfer new information and technology to area producers.
The major goal of the DREC is to increase the yields of commercial agriculture and aquaculture producers, while at the same
time preserving the Mississippi Delta's environment and natural resources.
The DREC is located in Stoneville, Miss., in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. The Center is a component of the Mississippi State

University's Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. It encompasses personnel employed by the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES), the MSU Extension Service (MSU-ES) and the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine (MSU-CVM).
