The arts community offers a substantial range of choices, from uptown symphony and theatre to down-home Blues. Delta Symphony Association, Delta Children’s Museum and Delta Center Stage, under the auspices of the Greenville Arts Council and E.E. Bass Foundation, provide an assortment of nationally known performance artists, lecturers and gallery exhibits to the county.

Delta Symphony Association, one of the oldest arts organizations in the Delta, brings musical diversity our way, providing opportunities for us to enjoy symphony concerts, dance to swing music or tap our feet to jazz. Delta Children’s Museum, the “museum with no walls,” brings entertainment with an educational focus to children and their families. One of our newest Delta attractions is the B. B. King’s Blues Museum located in Indianola, Mississippi, just a few miles east of Leland. Another must see is the vintage Carousel in Greenville, bringing even more enjoyment to the lives of our children.

Another important site is on the banks of Deer Creek in Leland – the birthplace of Kermit the Frog. This exhibit of Jim Henson’s Delta Boyhood features a tableau that honors Kermit the Frog’s birth on Deer Creek, photographs from the Henson Family Album, a video center showing many of Henson’s early works and a gift shop. On a side note, Henson was born at The King’s Daughters Hospital in Greenville. Visit the 2nd floor of the West Campus of DRMC, and you’ll see a life-size Miss Piggy and Kermit, displayed for all patients to enjoy.

This is history literally at your feet.

The Greenville Air Force Base Museum at Delta Regional Airport gives visitors a look at the scope of constructing an air base from the ground up. Large scale maps depict the original layout of Greenville Army Flying School. At the time of construction, war clouds were building, and there was an air of great anticipation plus a sense of urgency to get the base finished. The first class of cadets reported on December 15, 1941, just one week after the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

It would not be spring without the Main Street Arts & Crafts Festival held alongside the Jim Karr Memorial Catfish Races. There you can visit with vendors from all over the South while you cheer on your favorite fish. On the same day, the Cotton Classic 10K/5K Run & Walk travels through the downtown area. You can wave to runners from throughout the world as they compete for prizes and better race times. Since walkers are also allowed in the race, you can wave at them, too.
