Economy
Washington County is strategically located in the center of the United States. Within a 600-mile radius of Washington County is a population of 40 million people, including the metropolitan areas of Atlanta, Louisville, Birmingham, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, Little Rock, Dallas and Houston. Historically, Washington County’s economy has been built upon agribusiness, manufacturing, and services. New opportunities for logistics companies, green manufacturing, and green agribusiness are rapidly increasing in numbers.

World-class facilities such as the Stoneville Scientific Research facility and the USDA Research and Incubator facility provide unique business opportunities for today’s innovative companies. Mars Foods produces Uncle Ben’s rice products in Washington County for all of North America; Brown Corporation manufactures automotive parts for Nissan, Chrysler, Toyota, and General Motors from Washington County; LaZBoy produces business furniture and a patented bariatric chair for the healthcare industry from Washington County; and USG produces ceiling tiles for office buildings worldwide from Washington County.

Other Washington County industries include:
• Lauren Farms, a world-class producer of prawns, exporting their products as far as Dubai
• Monsanto-Delta Pineland, which produces world-class research and products from its three locations in Washington County
• Leading Edge, which provides painting services for America’s largest airlines, and the U.S. government
• World Class Athletics provides services for professional sports leagues and teams across North America

The boat manufacturing industry is another strong opportunity for Washington County. Currently, three of the United States’ largest towboat manufacturers are located in Washington County.

Government
Washington County government and economic development are centered in Greenville, Mississippi. Its pro-business attitude is embodied by the five-member Board of County Commissioners, elected to represent the citizens of Washington County, and the seven-member gubernatorially appointed Washington County Development Commission. The development commission contracts with the Washington County Chamber of Commerce for administrative services.
